Thomas J Sergiovanni, Leadership: What’s In It For Schools?

sergiovanniTremendous read. Thomas J Sergiovanni is an education professor at Trinity University, San Antonio. In his book, Sergiovanni’s first assumption is that mainstream leadership theories are too rational and too scripted for the messy, complex, disconnected, chaotic (and I would add, dynamic, in the sense that the people within them are always changing) world of schools. He therefore advocates leadership based, not on mandates, authority or personalities, but on ideas. He places emphasis on developing the inner structure of a school (the culture, values and beliefs) rather than the outer structure (management hierarchies) and advocates school leadership which is rooted in a shared vision within a moral community of heads, teachers, parents and students where the school leader is a head follower, leading discussion and acting as a model and steward.
